🐋 Whale Shark Award Set to Make Waves at Maldives Half Marathon

The upcoming Maldives Half Marathon is set to make a splash not just with individual achievements but with a powerful celebration of teamwork, thanks to the launch of the all new Whale Shark Award.
Inspired by the Maldives' iconic marine gentle giant, the Whale Shark Award is a team-based competition designed to recognize participation, community wellness, and team spirit at one of the country’s most anticipated running events.
Organizers say the award aims to highlight the collective energy that teams bring to the race, turning the spotlight on unity, support, and shared commitment to a healthy lifestyle.
“We wanted to create something that honors more than just speed — something that celebrates the joy, dedication, and spirit of running as a community,” said Coach Shujau, Race Director “The Whale Shark Award reflects the heart of what this event is about: movement, togetherness, and positive impact.”
Four Categories, One Goal: Community
Teams participating in the Maldives Half Marathon can compete for the Whale Shark Award in four distinct categories:
- Biggest Team – awarded to the team with the highest number of registered participants.
- Distance Team – for the team that covers the most total kilometers on race day.
- Team Spirit – recognizing the most creative, loud, and energetic presence both online and during the event.
- Health & Wellness – celebrating teams that promote wellness through training, lifestyle changes, or workplace health initiatives in the lead-up to race day.
Points, Posts, and Passion
While some categories like Biggest Team and Distance Team are judged using participant data and finish line results, others lean heavily into creativity and engagement.
Teams can score points by sharing photos and videos on social media — showcasing costumes, flags, chants, workouts, or wellness campaigns. Platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok will serve as the digital stage for teams to express their spirit.
All entries must be submitted by 9AM on August 15th, the day of the race. Submissions should tag @maldiveshalfmarathon to be counted.
Awards at the Finish Line
Winners of each category will be announced during the post-race celebration, where teams will receive their Whale Shark Award trophies — a symbol of pride and recognition in the Maldives’ vibrant running community.
