Maldives Half Marathon 2025 Concludes with Record-Breaking Participation
The Maldives Half Marathon 2025 concluded in Hulhumalé on 15 August with record participation, making it the largest half marathon event ever organized by iRunners. This year’s race brought together over 1,500 runners across all categories, creating a vibrant celebration of sport, community, and culture. The highlight was the Half Marathon (21.1 km), where 213 runners lined up at the start — the biggest field in the event’s history.
Quote from Race Director, Hussain Shujau
"It's amazing to see the growth of marathon tourism in Maldives. Maldives Half Marathon 2025 is our biggest international event so far with runners from 39 countries participating in the event. The 20 runners from Japanese Running Club in India's participation is something we welcome wholeheartedly, and we invite other global running clubs to visit Maldives for a Runcation. I want to personally thank all our sponsors, partners, volunteers and supporters for making Maldives Half Marathon 2025 a huge success."
The 2025 edition welcomed runners from 39 different countries, showcasing the global appeal of the event. Among them, a special highlight was the 20 international runners from the Japanese Running Club in India, whose enthusiasm added to the diverse spirit of the race.
In partnership with UNICEF Maldives, this year’s focus extended to the Kids Mile, which saw over 300 children take part. A remarkable 200 students from Salahuddin School participated, reflecting the growing passion for running among young Maldivians and the importance of building a healthier future generation.
The race week celebrations also featured the Maldives Running Expo, the biggest expo held to date. Spanning three days, the expo not only served as the official race kit collection point but also brought together the community for education, music, and family activities. The expo hosted panel discussions focused on protecting the environment, road safety, and healthy lifestyles, featuring experts from the Health Protection Agency, Tree Top Hospital, UNICEF, Ministry of Transport, Maldives Police Service, Maldives Food and Drug Authority, the National Mental Health Department, and the Maldives Wetland Foundation. Families and kids enjoyed live music by local artists and fitness stalls, while a special cultural practice session led by Nadhuha allowed children to explore the rich history of traditional Maldivian attire (Dhivehi Libaas). During the session, kids learned the intricate art of Kasabu weaving and how the Kasabu Bovalhu represents a cultural focal point in Maldivian tradition, giving them a hands-on experience of the nation’s heritage.
This year also saw the introduction of the Whale Shark Awards — a special recognition for teams and organizations that go the extra mile in representing their workplace and community. The awards celebrated runners and participants who embodied the spirit of endurance, sportsmanship, and community. The categories and winners were:
The charity component of the race, Run For a Cause – Protect The Reef, raised Rf 20,000 this year, bringing the total donations to Rf 57,000 since the program began. Funds raised support Save The Beach Maldives in protecting and growing the fragile Maldivian coral reefs. This year's funds will be used to build coral reefs in Villingili ward of Male City. As a whale shark-themed run, the Maldives Half Marathon emphasizes environmental stewardship while celebrating the ocean and its vibrant marine life.
The success of the Maldives Half Marathon 2025 would not have been possible without the strong support of our valued partners:iRunners and Move Maldives extend heartfelt thanks to every sponsor, partner, volunteer, and participant who made this year’s race possible. Together, we celebrated community, endurance, and the spirit of running, setting the stage for even bigger milestones in the years ahead.
