The Maldives Half Marathon (MHM) has announced Indian fitness icons Milind Soman and Ankita Konwar as International Ambassadors for its 2026 edition, set to take place on August 14 in Malé. The announcement marks the fifth annual running of MHM and deepens a running relationship between the couple and Maldivian sport that stretches back nearly a decade.

Soman, widely regarded as India’s first male supermodel, is a former national swimming champion who represented India at the inaugural South Asian Games in 1984. He later built a parallel career as an actor and producer before becoming one of India’s best-known endurance athletes, completing the Ironman Triathlon on his first attempt in 2015 — a feat that earned him the nickname “Ironman of Bollywood.” In 2012 he co-founded Pinkathon, now India’s largest women’s running movement, dedicated to promoting fitness and preventive health among women. Konwar, a former air hostess turned marathon runner and fitness content creator, has become one of India’s most visible advocates for distance running and healthy living, frequently training and racing alongside Soman.

The pairing is a homecoming of sorts. Soman served as Ambassador for the Maldives International Marathon in 2019 — the first international running event ever hosted in the Maldives, staged across Malé and Hulhumalé in partnership with the running club iRunners. At that event, Konwar placed first in the women’s marathon barefoot category, part of the couple’s long-standing advocacy for barefoot running. Soman went on to serve as Ambassador for the Maldives Half Marathon again in 2023, making this year’s appointment his third turn supporting the race.

“Milind and Ankita aren’t new friends of this race, they’ve been part of its story since the very first international marathon we held here in 2019,” said Hussain Shujau, Race Director of the Maldives Half Marathon. “Having them back as our International Ambassadors for our fifth edition reflects the deep sporting ties between India and the Maldives, and gives runners another reason to make the trip.”

Organizers are framing the ambassadorship as part of a broader push to grow race participation and strengthen the event’s regional profile, with Soman and Konwar expected to support pre-race promotion, community running initiatives, and appearances around race weekend. The move also reinforces MHM’s positioning under the iRunners “Move More” and “Protect the Reef” campaigns, with this year’s proceeds continuing to support Save The Beach’s coral reef restoration project in Villingili.

The India-Maldives relationship has long included strong people-to-people and sporting ties, and organizers say the ambassadorship is intended to build on that goodwill — drawing Indian runners to the Maldives while spotlighting the islands as a growing destination for international distance running.
